Berserker: Throne & Liberty's Sword & Shield + Dagger Build

Sword and Shield + Dagger · build guide · updated Aug 2026

The short version
Tank durability with assassin damage — routinely called the best melee combination in the game.

The Berserker is the answer to a question most builds have to choose between: survive, or kill. Sword and Shield brings the game's best defensive kit and hard crowd control; the Dagger brings the game's best crit passives. You get to dive into a fight, control it, and still put out real damage — which is why it sits in the top tier of most 2026 PvP lists.

The build that refuses to make the usual trade. Here's why it works and where its ceiling actually is.

What the build is

Sword and Shield is the tank weapon — Provoking Roar for aggro, Chain Hook to pull targets in, Shield Strike and Shield Throw for control, Counter Barrier and Stalwart Bastion to survive, with Aegis Shield and Impenetrable underneath. The Dagger is the assassin weapon, and crucially its passives — Wrathful Edge, Assassin's Instincts, Destructive Fang — are the strongest crit package in the game. Bolted onto a shield build, those passives turn a durable frontliner into something that genuinely threatens. Shadow Strike and Camouflage Cloak add mobility and an escape that pure tank builds simply don't have.

Why players run it

How to play it

Role
Bruiser — shield survivability with assassin-grade burst
Stat priority
Strength for the health pool and heavy-attack chance, Dexterity for the crit rate the Dagger passives multiply; Perception third for hit chance, Wisdom lowest
Key skills & passives
Sword and Shield: Chain Hook, Provoking Roar, Shield Strike, Stalwart Bastion, Counter Barrier · passives Aegis Shield, Impenetrable. Dagger: Shadow Strike, Brutal Incision, Camouflage Cloak · passives Wrathful Edge, Assassin's Instincts, Destructive Fang
Core loop
Chain Hook to pull → Shield Strike to lock → Dagger burst under crit passives → Stalwart Bastion through the counter-attack → Camouflage Cloak if it goes wrong

Split Strength and Dexterity and don't apologise for it — this is the rare build where the split is the point rather than a tax, because Strength buys the durability that lets you stay in range long enough for the Dagger's crit passives to matter. Lead Strength if you're tanking for a group, lead Dexterity if you're duelling. The core sequence is Chain Hook into hard control into burst: pulling a target out of position and killing it before its team reacts is the play this build exists for. What it doesn't have is a way to force a fight at range, so patient, kiting opponents are the matchup where its ceiling shows.

The honest trade-off

✓ Why to run it

  • Genuinely durable and genuinely dangerous — very few builds are both.
  • Chain Hook gives you a way to start fights on your terms.
  • Has an escape, which most bruiser builds don't.
  • Flexible: shifts between tanking and DPS with a stat rebalance rather than a rebuild.

△ Honest caveats

  • Split stats — you're never as tanky as a pure tank or as sharp as a pure assassin.
  • No ranged pressure at all; kiters can decline the fight.
  • Popular, so opponents know the Chain Hook opener is coming.
  • Needs decent crit gear before the Dagger half contributes much.

Quick answers

Is the Berserker good in Throne and Liberty?

Yes — Sword and Shield + Dagger is frequently described as the best melee combination in the game, because it keeps the full defensive kit while adding the Dagger's best-in-class crit passives.

What stats should a Berserker prioritize?

Strength and Dexterity together — Strength for health and heavy-attack chance, Dexterity for the crit rate the Dagger passives multiply. Lead Strength for tanking, Dexterity for duelling.

Can it tank group content?

Yes, if you lead Strength. The Sword and Shield half retains its full toolkit — taunt, control and survival cooldowns — regardless of the off-hand.

What beats it?

Ranged builds that can kite. The Berserker has no way to pressure at distance, so a patient opponent who refuses to close can decline the fight entirely.
