Gauntlets + Staff: Throne & Liberty's Melee-Magic Hybrid

Gauntlets + Staff · build guide · updated Aug 2026

The short version
Two damage types in one build — flexible, and the hardest Gauntlets pairing to gear.

The Staff is Throne and Liberty's elemental artillery: Ice Spear, Serial Fire Bombs, Chain Lightning, Infernal Meteor. The Gauntlets are its opposite — a chained-combo brawler that wants to be inside melee range. Running both gives you an answer at every distance and a real problem on your stat sheet, because one wants Wisdom and the other wants Strength. It's the most flexible Gauntlets pairing and the most demanding to gear.

This is the pairing for players who refuse to be locked to one range band. It works — but be clear-eyed about what it costs you. Here's the honest version.

What the build is

The Staff is the game's dedicated magic ranged weapon, built around elemental damage and area control — Ice Spear and Icebound Tomb to lock targets down, Serial Fire Bombs and Inferno Wave to burn ground, Chain Lightning and Judgment Lightning for multi-target damage. It scales off Wisdom. The Gauntlets, from The Frozen Divide: Nix, are a Strength-scaling melee brawler with two states, the second being Eclipse of Blood — a claws transformation that raises attack power and combat speed for a chained-damage window. The pairing works because the Staff's crowd control creates exactly the uninterrupted seconds the Gauntlets need. It's awkward because your points have to go two places.

Why players run it

How to play it

Role
Hybrid DPS — elemental damage at range, chained strikes up close
Stat priority
Wisdom and Strength split — Wisdom for Staff damage, mana and cooldown speed, Strength for the health that makes melee survivable. Commit to whichever half you lean on and don't try to max both
Key skills & passives
Staff: Ice Spear, Icebound Tomb, Serial Fire Bombs, Chain Lightning, Judgment Lightning · passives Mana Amp, Flame Condensation, Frost Master. Gauntlets: Eclipse of Blood
Core loop
Open at range with Ice Spear / Serial Fire Bombs → Icebound Tomb to lock → close → Eclipse of Blood → chained strikes on a held target

Be honest with yourself about which half is your primary, and gear that half. The trap in every hybrid build is spreading points evenly and ending up with two mediocre weapons instead of one good one — and this pairing punishes that harder than most, because Wisdom and Strength share almost nothing. If you play it as a mage that can defend itself, lead Wisdom and treat the Gauntlets as your answer to divers. If you play it as a brawler with a ranged opener, lead Strength and use the Staff for its crowd control rather than its damage. Either way the combination move is the same: Icebound Tomb or another lock, then close, then transform.

The honest trade-off

✓ Why to run it

  • Genuinely no dead range band — you always have something to press.
  • Staff crowd control sets up the Gauntlets' damage window perfectly.
  • Two damage types are awkward to build resistances against.
  • Handles both single targets and packs comfortably.

△ Honest caveats

  • The worst stat split in the Gauntlets family — Wisdom and Strength don't help each other at all.
  • Lower ceiling than a committed build in either direction.
  • Gears slowly; you need two sets of priorities to come online.
  • Easy to play badly — flexibility invites indecision.

Kit for a two-range build

You'll be swapping stance and range constantly, which means more bindings in play than a single-range build needs. Reachable keys matter.

Quick answers

Is Gauntlets + Staff good in Throne and Liberty?

It's flexible and fun but demanding. Staff crowd control sets up the Gauntlets well, though the Wisdom/Strength stat split means it has a lower ceiling than a committed build.

What stats should Gauntlets + Staff prioritize?

Pick a primary. Lead Wisdom if you play it as a mage with a melee answer, or Strength if you play it as a brawler with a ranged opener — splitting evenly produces two mediocre weapons.

Why is the stat split a problem?

Staff damage scales off Wisdom while Gauntlets scale off Strength, and the two stats share almost no benefits. Every point spent on one does nothing for the other.

Is it good for PvE?

Yes — Staff area damage clears packs quickly and the Gauntlets handle whatever survives, so levelling and dungeon trash are both comfortable.
