The Sword and Shield already has everything a tank needs: taunt, hard control, and a stack of survival cooldowns. The Orb extends all of it outward. Its spheres barrier allies as readily as they barrier you, and they deny ground an enemy needs to cross. The result is a tank whose value is measured in what the rest of the group survives, not just what it survives itself.
If you want to be the reason your group doesn't wipe, this is the pairing. Here's the toolkit and the honest limitation.
What the build is
Sword and Shield is Throne and Liberty's dedicated tank weapon: Provoking Roar to hold aggro, Chain Hook to pull, Shield Throw and Shield Strike for control, and Counter Barrier, Stalwart Bastion and Blessing of Immortality to survive, all supported by Aegis Shield, Impenetrable and Resilient Mind. The Orb adds a second protective layer that reaches beyond you: up to three placed spheres, triggered on command, which barrier allies, block enemy advances or detonate to break a push. Where most tank pairings add personal damage, this one adds group survivability — a genuinely different job.
Why players run it
- Protection that reaches your group — barriers land on allies, not just the tank.
- Area denial on top of a taunt — you control both attention and terrain.
- Layered defence — shield cooldowns and sphere barriers cover different windows.
- Outstanding in sieges — holding a chokepoint is exactly what this build does.
How to play it
Think of your cooldowns and your spheres as two separate defensive budgets covering different windows, and spend them in sequence rather than together — shield cooldowns for the opening pressure, sphere barriers when those run out or when the group takes an unexpected hit. Strength leads for your health pool, Wisdom is a genuine second because sphere uptime is half your value, and Perception third so Chain Hook and Provoking Roar actually connect against geared opponents. The limitation to be honest about: your personal damage is the lowest of any pairing on this site. You are not going to kill anyone in a duel. What you will do is make a chokepoint impossible to take, and in group content that trade is usually the right one.
The honest trade-off
✓ Why to run it
- The best group-protection toolkit available to a tank.
- Two independent defensive layers covering different moments.
- Genuine area denial alongside a proper taunt.
- Exceptional value in sieges and objective defence.
△ Honest caveats
- Lowest damage of any build on this site — duelling is not an option.
- Split Strength/Wisdom gearing takes a while to come online.
- Sphere placement must be planned; reactive use wastes it.
- Contributes little in fast open-field fights.
Kit for a group anchor
Tanking is reactive work — the right cooldown at the right second, aggro on the loose target. Reach beats speed.
Quick answers
Is the Guardian good in Throne and Liberty?
Yes, as a group tank. It keeps the full Sword and Shield toolkit and adds Orb barriers that protect allies as well as you, making it exceptional in sieges and objective content.
What stats should a Guardian prioritize?
Strength first for health and heavy-attack chance, Wisdom second for Orb cooldown speed and buff duration, Perception third so your taunt and pull land reliably.
Can it main-tank group content?
Yes — the Sword and Shield half is a complete tank kit, and the Orb adds group protection on top rather than replacing anything.
What's the main downside?
Damage. It has the lowest personal output of any pairing covered here, so it is entirely dependent on a group to actually kill things.
