Every Longbow build has the same problem: what happens when something closes the distance. The Scryer's answer is to make that walk cost something. The Orb's spheres deny the approach, barrier you when it fails, and buy the seconds the Longbow needs to land Steady Aim into Decisive Sniping. It's the most defensively complete ranged build in the game, and the slowest to kill anything.
The sniper build that finally has an answer to being rushed. Here's the trade you're making.
What the build is
The Longbow is Throne and Liberty's sniper — Strafing and Brutal Arrow for sustained damage, Ensnaring Arrow to slow an approach, and Steady Aim into Decisive Sniping for the single biggest ranged hit available. It scales off Dexterity and Perception. The Orb, added in the New Wave update, places up to three spheres at around 12m which can barrier, block an advance, or detonate on command. Together they make a fortified firing position: Ensnaring Arrow slows the target, spheres deny the ground it must cross, and every second spent crossing is a second you're shooting.
Why players run it
- An actual answer to being closed on — the rarest thing for a Longbow build to have.
- Slow plus denial stack — Ensnaring Arrow and sphere zoning compound on each other.
- Barriers protect the cast — Steady Aim needs uninterrupted time, and now it gets it.
- Strong in sieges — chokepoints and defended positions play directly to this build.
How to play it
Pick your ground and fortify it. This build is at its best when you've had thirty seconds to decide where you're going to stand and what the approach to you looks like — spheres on the obvious path, clear sightlines, and Ensnaring Arrow held for whoever ignores both. Dexterity and Perception lead for the Longbow half, and take Wisdom third rather than skipping it, since sphere uptime is the entire defensive plan. Be clear about the cost: the Orb contributes almost nothing to your damage, so you kill more slowly than a Longbow paired with Dagger or Staff. What you get instead is the ability to hold a position, which in siege content is frequently worth more than raw output.
The honest trade-off
✓ Why to run it
- The best defensive toolkit available to a ranged build.
- Slow and denial compound — closing on you is genuinely hard.
- Barriers protect the long cast times the Longbow depends on.
- Excellent in sieges, chokepoints and defended objectives.
△ Honest caveats
- Low damage output — the Orb adds almost no offence.
- Weak in fast open-field fights where there's no time to fortify.
- Three stats to manage: Dexterity, Perception and Wisdom.
- Passive by nature; it rewards holding ground, not taking it.
Kit for a fortified sniper
Long-range shots and precise sphere placement are the same skill twice. Aim is where this build's setup budget belongs.
Quick answers
Is the Scryer good in Throne and Liberty?
It's the most defensively complete ranged build available, and excellent in sieges. Its weakness is damage — the Orb adds protection rather than offence, so it kills slowly.
What stats should a Scryer prioritize?
Dexterity and Perception for the Longbow's crit and hit chance, then Wisdom for Orb cooldown speed and placement range. Strength only to a survivable floor.
Is it good for PvP?
Very good in sieges and objective fights where you can prepare a position. Much weaker in open-field skirmishes where there's no time to place spheres.
How does it compare to the Liberator (Staff + Longbow)?
Liberator does considerably more damage; Scryer survives being closed on. Choose Liberator to kill things and Scryer to hold ground.
