Shadowdancer: Throne & Liberty's Spear + Dagger Build

Spear + Dagger · build guide · updated Aug 2026

The short version
Dagger crit passives are the fastest way in the game to detonate Ignite.

This is the purest crit build on the Spear list. The Dagger's passives — Wrathful Edge, Assassin's Instincts, Destructive Fang — exist to raise crit rate and crit damage, and the Spear's Ignite mechanic applies stacks only on critical hits. Stack crit, and the ten-stack detonation arrives faster than any other pairing can manage. Add stealth and a gap-close and you have a genuine melee assassin.

The synergy here is mechanical rather than thematic, and it's the strongest argument for the build. Here's exactly how it works.

What the build is

The Dagger is Throne and Liberty's assassin weapon: Shadow Strike to appear on a target, Camouflage Cloak and Phantom Smokescreen for stealth and escape, Brutal Incision and Frenzied Sword Dance for damage — all sitting on top of crit passives (Wrathful Edge, Assassin's Instincts, Destructive Fang) that are the best in the game. The Spear brings reach, Gale Rush, and Ignite — stacks applied on critical hits, up to ten over nine seconds, detonating for heavy damage in a 3m radius. Because Ignite is gated entirely behind crit, the Dagger's passives don't just add damage to this build; they change how fast its core mechanic functions.

Why players run it

How to play it

Role
Melee assassin — stealth opener into rapid Ignite detonation
Stat priority
Dexterity first and hard (crit rate is the build), then Perception for hit chance and crit damage; Strength enough to survive being seen, Wisdom lowest
Key skills & passives
Dagger: Shadow Strike, Camouflage Cloak, Phantom Smokescreen, Brutal Incision · passives Wrathful Edge, Assassin's Instincts, Destructive Fang. Spear: Vicious Fury, Cyclonic Fury, Rising Slash, Gale Rush · Ignite
Core loop
Camouflage Cloak → Shadow Strike onto the target → alternate Dagger and Spear damage to stack Ignite fast → detonation → Phantom Smokescreen out

Gear crit above everything. On most builds that's a preference; here it's structural, because Ignite applies on critical hits and nothing else, so your crit rate is a direct multiplier on how quickly your biggest damage event happens. Dexterity leads, Perception follows for hit chance and crit damage, and Strength gets only what you need to not fall over. Open from stealth so the first few seconds of stacking happen before anyone reacts. The hard part is discipline with the escape: Phantom Smokescreen is your only real defensive tool, and using it to enter a fight leaves you with nothing to leave one. Assassins who die in this build almost always died because they spent the exit on the entrance.

The honest trade-off

✓ Why to run it

  • The fastest Ignite detonations available — the crit synergy is mechanical.
  • Stealth means you pick your target and your moment.
  • A genuine escape tool, which most melee builds lack.
  • Very high single-target damage ceiling.

△ Honest caveats

  • Extremely squishy — low Strength, no shield, and you fight at melee range.
  • Under-geared crit makes the whole build feel broken until it comes online.
  • One escape; spend it wrong and you die.
  • Punishing to learn compared to the Greatsword pairings.

Quick answers

Is the Shadowdancer good in Throne and Liberty?

Yes, with good crit gear. The Dagger's crit passives directly accelerate the Spear's Ignite mechanic, which is gated behind critical hits, giving it the fastest detonations of any Spear pairing.

What stats should a Shadowdancer prioritize?

Dexterity first and heavily for crit rate, then Perception for hit chance and crit damage. Strength only to the level where you survive being noticed.

Why is crit so important here?

The Spear's Ignite stacks apply only on critical hits. Crit rate isn't a damage bonus on this build — it's the mechanic that makes the build's biggest damage event happen at all.

Is it beginner-friendly?

No. It's squishy, it depends on gear to function, and it has exactly one escape. The Gladiator is a far more forgiving entry into Spear builds.
