Raider: Throne & Liberty's Sword & Shield + Crossbow Build

Sword and Shield + Crossbow · build guide · updated Aug 2026

The short version
A ranged build that punishes anyone who dives it — which is how ranged builds normally lose.

The Raider is the answer to being focused. The Crossbow provides fast ranged damage and Nimble Leap; the Sword and Shield provides a taunt, hard control and a stack of survival cooldowns. Assassins who dive you find a shield build waiting, and that inversion is the entire appeal — you're a ranged damage dealer that wins the fight ranged damage dealers usually lose.

The durable ranged build. Here's what it's genuinely good at, and the damage you give up for it.

What the build is

Sword and Shield is the tank weapon: Provoking Roar for aggro, Chain Hook to pull, Shield Strike and Shield Throw for control, and Counter Barrier, Stalwart Bastion and Blessing of Immortality to survive, with Aegis Shield and Impenetrable underneath. The Crossbow is fast ranged damage with mobility — Quick Fire, Rapid Shot, Merciless Barrage, Mortal Mark and Nimble Leap — scaling off Dexterity and Perception. The pairing's identity is durability at range: you pressure from distance, and when someone finally comes for you, you have a full defensive kit rather than a prayer.

Why players run it

How to play it

Role
Durable ranged DPS — Crossbow damage behind a shield kit
Stat priority
Dexterity for Crossbow damage and crit, Strength for health and the shield half; Perception third for hit chance, Wisdom lowest
Key skills & passives
Crossbow: Quick Fire, Rapid Shot, Merciless Barrage, Mortal Mark, Nimble Leap · passives Eagle Vision, Ambidexterity. Sword and Shield: Chain Hook, Provoking Roar, Shield Strike, Stalwart Bastion, Counter Barrier · passives Aegis Shield, Impenetrable
Core loop
Pressure with Quick Fire / Rapid Shot → Chain Hook anyone who closes → Shield Strike to lock → point-blank Crossbow damage → shield cooldowns through the reply

Lead Dexterity, because the Crossbow is doing your damage and the shield is doing your surviving — the mistake is investing so heavily in Strength that you become a tank who can't kill anything. Take enough Strength to make the defensive kit meaningful and stop there. The play that defines the build is inverting a dive: when an assassin commits to you, Chain Hook and Shield Strike turn their engagement into your engagement, and point-blank Crossbow damage finishes it. Its honest limitation is output — you will never match a dedicated ranged build's damage — so it earns its place through consistency and by simply never dying.

The honest trade-off

✓ Why to run it

  • Wins the anti-dive matchup that decides most ranged builds' fates.
  • Extremely consistent — hard to kill, always contributing.
  • Chain Hook lets you initiate as well as defend.
  • Can cover a tank slot at short notice.

△ Honest caveats

  • Middling damage — a specialist ranged build out-damages it substantially.
  • Dexterity/Strength split slows gearing.
  • Not a true tank — the Crossbow contributes no threat generation.
  • Fewer highlight moments; it wins by attrition, not burst.

Quick answers

Is the Raider good in Throne and Liberty?

It's a very consistent build that wins the anti-dive matchup most ranged builds lose. Its weakness is damage — it won't match a dedicated Crossbow pairing's output.

What stats should a Raider prioritize?

Dexterity first for Crossbow damage and crit, then enough Strength to make the shield kit meaningful. Over-investing in Strength turns it into a tank that can't kill.

Can it tank group content?

Not properly. It has the Sword and Shield toolkit but the Crossbow generates no threat, so it can off-tank at a push rather than main-tank.

What's its best matchup?

Assassins and divers. Chain Hook and Shield Strike turn their engagement into yours, and point-blank Crossbow damage does the rest.
