Warden: Throne & Liberty's Sword & Shield + Longbow Build

Sword and Shield + Longbow · build guide · updated Aug 2026

The short version
A sniper wearing a shield — slow to kill, and very hard to remove from a position.

The Warden trades damage for permanence. The Longbow lands the largest single ranged hit in the game; the Sword and Shield means the assassin sent to stop you doesn't. It kills slowly and it holds ground indefinitely, which makes it a siege and objective build far more than a duelling one.

The most immovable ranged build in Throne and Liberty. Here's when that's worth it, and when it isn't.

What the build is

The Longbow is the sniper — Strafing and Brutal Arrow for sustained poke, Ensnaring Arrow to slow an approach, and Steady Aim into Decisive Sniping for a single enormous hit — scaling off Dexterity and Perception. Sword and Shield is the tank weapon: Provoking Roar, Chain Hook, Shield Strike and Shield Throw for control, plus Counter Barrier, Stalwart Bastion and Blessing of Immortality to survive, with Aegis Shield and Impenetrable behind them. The pairing exists for one reason: the Longbow's long cast times need protection, and no other off-hand protects them this well.

Why players run it

How to play it

Role
Durable ranged DPS — sniper damage behind a full shield kit
Stat priority
Dexterity and Perception for the Longbow's crit and hit chance, Strength for the health pool that makes the shield half meaningful; lean Dexterity for damage, Strength for holding objectives
Key skills & passives
Longbow: Strafing, Brutal Arrow, Ensnaring Arrow, Steady Aim, Decisive Sniping. Sword and Shield: Chain Hook, Shield Strike, Provoking Roar, Stalwart Bastion, Counter Barrier · passives Aegis Shield, Impenetrable
Core loop
Poke with Strafing / Brutal Arrow → Ensnaring Arrow on anyone closing → Steady Aim into Decisive Sniping → Chain Hook and Shield Strike if they arrive

Lead Dexterity and Perception so the Longbow actually hurts, and take Strength for the health pool rather than for damage — the shield's value here is the cooldowns and the control, not the swing. The build's whole premise is uninterrupted casting, so use Ensnaring Arrow early on anyone approaching and save the shield's control for when that fails. Against a diver, invert the engagement: Chain Hook pulls them out of their momentum, Shield Strike locks them, and point-blank Longbow damage finishes what the stun started. Be clear on the limitation — you kill slowly, and against opponents content to stay at range and out-damage you, there's no plan B. This is a build for holding a place, not for chasing a fight.

The honest trade-off

✓ Why to run it

  • The best protection available for the Longbow's long cast times.
  • Wins the anti-dive matchup decisively.
  • Genuinely immovable from a defended position.
  • Two layers of control — a slow and a hard stun.

△ Honest caveats

  • Low damage output — the shield contributes nothing offensive.
  • Dexterity/Strength split slows gearing considerably.
  • No answer to a ranged opponent who simply out-damages you.
  • Passive by nature; poor at taking ground rather than holding it.

Quick answers

Is the Warden good in Throne and Liberty?

It's excellent at holding ground and beating divers, which makes it strong in sieges and objective play. Its weakness is damage — the shield adds no offence, so it kills slowly.

What stats should a Warden prioritize?

Dexterity and Perception for the Longbow's crit and hit chance, then Strength for the health pool. Lean Dexterity for damage or Strength for objective holding.

What's its best matchup?

Assassins and melee divers. Chain Hook and Shield Strike turn their commitment into a stun, and point-blank Longbow damage finishes it.

What's its worst matchup?

Other ranged builds. If an opponent stays at distance and simply out-damages you, the shield half contributes nothing and you have no way to force the issue.
